How the Shillong Teer is Played?
Shillong Teer is played twice a week, six days a week. Fifty archers fire thirty arrows in the first session and twenty arrows in the second session.
The punters wager on the last two digits of the total number of arrows hitting the mark. The outcome of the first round is announced at 4:00 p.m., and the outcome of the second round is announced at 5:00 p.m.
There are more than 5,000 Teer counters operational throughout Meghalaya,, where the game is being conducted. There are other seasons of different durations, with two distinct times during summer and winter.
How Shillong Teer Game Became Legalized?
The Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982 legalized the game of Shillong Teer and brought it into force. The State government and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya regulated it in the legal sphere. Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the Chief Minister at the time, played a key role in the enactment of the law, with support from the state legislative assembly.
This act legalized the game and classified it as a betting process rather than gambling. The Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982 now governs all legal activities related to Teer betting, ensuring that the game operates in a systematic manner.
The British Influence on Teer
During their time in Shillong, the British observed the traditional game of archery, and notably, they noticed the competitive version of the game. As a result, they borrowed the process of lottery and betting from these archery games and subsequently formalized them.
Most prevalent among these is the theory that, during colonial times, Shillong was the capital of Assam. The British were reportedly drawn to the cooler climate of Meghalaya as a relief from the intense heat of the plains.
